What
Is Computer Forensics?
Computer-based information has become an important
resource for evidence in criminal investigations and legal matters.
Today's society has seen a dramatic increase in the creation
and use of electronic documents and transactions with legal
significance, including word processor files, databases, spreadsheets,
and email.
Computer
forensics applies computer technology for the purpose of examining
potential evidence, including, but not limited to: trade secret
theft; destruction of property; fraud; criminal intent; and
harassment. Computer forensic evidence is fast becoming an integral
component of many investigations and legal matters. Specialists
can recover data that has been deleted, damaged, or encrypted.
An experienced computer forensics expert can salvage hidden
files, system files, temporary files, history files, application
log files, and numerous other varieties of files not readily
accessible to the average computer user.
